MR. SOURAV PUROHIT
**Sourav Purohit**, a dedicated flautist, has been passionately playing the flute for the past 10 years. His interest in the flute began in childhood, but due to a lack of guidance, he didn’t have the opportunity to learn it formally during his early years.
At the age of 16, Sourav completed a Purohit Course, where he was introduced to Vedic chanting and vocal training. This experience significantly boosted his musical foundation. It was during this time that a childhood friend introduced him to the flute. Despite his enthusiasm, he was not able to find a professional flute and got a local flute at Rs 35/-. Inspired by pictures of Shree Krishna, he began to play and explore the flute by himself.
Sourav’s journey was marked by significant struggles. He left school in the 9th standard to pursue the Purohit Course and, upon returning, resumed his academics. After completing his 12th grade, he devoted himself to divine worship and serving God, continuing to play the flute during this period. His talent did not go unnoticed; Swamini Vimalananda Ji recognized his potential and gifted him a professional flute. She also introduced him to Shree Himanshu Nanda Ji (Guruji), a disciple of the legendary flautist Padma Vibhushan Hari Prasad Chaurasia Ji (DadaGuru).
This introduction marked a new beginning for Sourav. With the grace of Lord Krishna and Guruji Shree Himanshu Nanda Ji, he had the opportunity to stay and learn music in the traditional Gurukul style. This ancient method of learning deeply enriched his musical abilities.
After several years of rigorous practice, Sourav joined Bharati Vidyapeeth, where he began his music graduation. During this time, he was introduced to Pt. Rajendra Kulkarni Ji, further enhancing his musical journey. Despite facing financial challenges throughout his life, Sourav remained committed to his passion for music.
Determined to give back to the universe that had nurtured his talents, Sourav established his own academy, Swara Sourav. The academy offers flute courses at very low prices to ensure that all aspiring musicians can pursue their passion without financial burdens. Sourav’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that no one should have to sacrifice their livelihood to learn music, as he did.
Through Swara Sourav, Sourav has taught more than 300 students, ranging from ages 5 to 70. He is currently working on a project to make flute learning accessible to everyone. The academy also offers courses in guitar, vocals, tabla, and keyboard, taught by professional teachers. Sourav has contributed to over 50 albums, providing background flute music, and continues to inspire and nurture the next generation of musicians.
